Anxiety Attacks in Children: Causes, Effects and Possible Interventions
Anxiety among children is very common. Even if they are well known, it is sad to know that they are the ones that are usually disregarded. Children are said to be “just” children. However, if you do not take particular attention to their concerns then things may just go out of hand in the end.
To know the entirety of the nature of anxiety attacks in children, we must have a unified concept of what factors may seem to cause it, what effects may be manifested and also how we can counter them. This is not easy, but since children are often misjudged then this issue needs to be addressed.
As to the causes of childish anxieties, children often experience them because of a failure in the parent child bonding. If ever the mother, for example, will get anxious of handling the newborn then it is most likely that the anxiety will be transferred to the child. The most concrete factor may be the non-provision of the child’s basic necessities. If the child is deprived of the motherly affection then the child may develop strange behaviors or anxieties in the end. If ever a child is threatened with frightening jokes, then he or she may develop phobias. Hence it is the unresolved conflicts during childhood, which is the root of the anxiety.
In the future, if the child doesn’t resolve the crises that he or she has experienced then he will develop a more serious type of anxiety like the generalized anxiety disorder. As stated earlier, phobias also result from a threat that’s why even if we grow old it is still possible that you remain scared of the dark. Another possible effect is having some degree of intellectual and behavioral impairment. The anxious child will grow to become an introverted and apathetic adolescent. The child who experienced trauma and serious anxiety provoking situations in the past like the death of his or her mother may become a slow learner and much worse if this child will become one of those infamous “difficult” children. Life is full of risks and if ever the child is anxious of taking simple risks then he or she will never learn how to grow out of the shell.
So what can you do to help these children? Even if you are not a parent yourself, you can start assisting the anxious child by not worrying much yourself. Remember that anxiety can transfer from person to person. If the child sees that you are anxious then he or she will progress into panic. You can also advise the child not to eat junk foods because these products contain substances that can stimulate anxiety. Moreover, focus on the child’s strengths and do activities that he or she loves to do. In this connection, it is advisable to have some fun and non-competitive games with the child because play is a part of their life.
If you only understand all of these concepts, then you can help in taking away the child’s anxieties as quickly as it came. Never give up because anxiety attacks can be helped.
