   While medication is an effective way to control anxiety or panic attacks, other methods sometimes work for some people, either in concert with medication or alone.
   Some non-medication treatments are cognitive behavior therapy, hypnosis, breathing exercises, yoga, acupressure/acupuncture, desensitization therapy, etc. The root seems to be to learn to reconstruct your thoughts to overcome fear.
   There are books on the subject which are helpful, and listings online under “panic attacks,” including WebMD.com (Panic attack treatment and prevention).
   Give yourself alternatives, do some reading, and good luck!

   Hi
   I’d like to give some solid advice to you about panic attacks, and to the others here too advocating all kinds of methods!! There are many dead ends you can go down tryin to deal with this problem. I have a history of them and now I have dealt with them.
   When a person has a panic attack they are frozen in fear. This is not cowardice. Panic attacks become a private hidden secret inner prison that destroys a person’s life and self-esteem. A person tries so hard to hide it even from him/herself. Panic attacks come on like a heart attack without a warning. It is a very similar feeling and hard to detect which makes it even scarier. The chest tightens, there is no way to handle the fear factor, the feeling that is paralyzing and comes from out of nowhere. Physical discomfort like a rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, hot flashes and trouble swallowing regularly accompany the attacks. Panic attacks usually peak within ten minutes but can last 30 minutes. Sometimes panic attacks can last as long as a day. Many feel very tired and worn out after the attack subsides.
   Learning how to stop panic attacks is a priority for the majority of those who have ever experienced them. This is because panic attacks are emotionally, mentally and physically draining. Some have gone so far as to describe panic attacks as emotional nightmares.
   Although a doctor is a good port of call first in case there is some health-cause, medications do not always alleviate the panic attacks, especially long term, and those prescribed with anti-psychotic medication are on the road to further problems resulting from the consistent use of chemicals that eventually have a permanent negative effect on the brain.
   I am not a doctor or a professional person, but I am a person that lived with panic attacks and have overcome them. I’ve had to read information and misinformation from sources that proscribe to know about panic attacks but they don’t. People give so many varied points of view on how one should deal with them. Persons that have panic attacks not only have to deal with the panic attacks, they have to deal with people who have a lack of understanding and arguments at the same time.
   There are now simple techniques you can learn to help you stop panic attacks quickly and easily and eventually cure panic attacks completely. These techniques have been tested and proven through research and actual application to stop panic attack quickly and effectively.
   I’ve included a link if anybody wants to really get to know more about these techniques and how to stop the panic attacks completely and for good. I’ve been there so I wish all those on the search the best, and I offer lots of optimism because this affliction can be overcome.

   I have read that panic attacks don’t respond to therapy or cognitive behaviorism, because they originate in the amygdala and not the cerebral cortex. Therefore, you’re limited to trying to shorten them as much as possible.
   One way is to use up the adrenaline in your system by exercising until you feel calmer. Most people lie down, and this is counterproductive.
   Another is by trying to meditate, but this works only if you are good enough at it to block out your physical symptoms. This is hard for most people.
   Realizing that they are a ‘false alarm’ helps keep you mentally calm.

   Hey… Victoria here, maybe my personal story can give you some solace…
   a lil about me- about a year after my husband left me and my daughter died about 5 years ago.. I was at a very difficult point in my life, and was ultimately diagnosed with depression, severe anxiety, and panic disorder. I would say that i’ve always for the most part been a little depressed and had some degree of anxiety, but this just completely tipped the scale. I remember there were days on end I would just lie in bed, and whenever I would be in a social environment my anxiety would go through the roof and I would often have panic attacks. Therapy never seemed to be effective for me, and my psych put me on damn near every med out there. I’ve been on everything from wellbutrin to paxil, zoloft, prozac, lexapro, celexa, buspar, valium, klonopin, xanax.. etc. Sometimes 2-3 different ones in combo at the same time. Nothing really seemed to work for me. With the exception of some of the benzos (klono./xanax) .. these worked well for a little while, but I grew tolerance quickly, and became highly addicted.
   Then one day while researching online i came across this reputable looking website http://www.anxiety.pcti-system.com .. which talked about this program to eliminate your anxiety for good, all naturally. Long story short, I wound up signing up to try it and the program worked amazing.. Not only do I no longer have panic attacks and anxiety gone, but my depression has also seemed to dissipate a little. And I’m currently starting to slowly ween off the meds I’m on. >>>>
   I would personally say that possibly the biggest driving factor in all this is OCD. I think obsessing and constantly having your thoughts focused on your own condition and constantly analyzing your own thoughts/actions plays a very significant role in the persistence of our ails. Almost like the condition is a small lit fire, and OCD is the fuel that keeps it consistently burning… Also, I’ve come to the conclusion that meds are generally a unhealthy short term cure that only semi-treats the symptoms, and never the cause. Hope I was of some help!

   I’ve had them on and off for many years. I have never told a doctor about it. I try to breathe slowly as well as actively pursue an activity which will get my mind on something other than myself. That almost always stops the attacks. I still get a bout of them every few months, and it IS difficult and scary, but I also intellectually know that they will pass and more quickly if I do what I stated above. Good Luck

   talk to a psychologist or therapist or something. they can usually solve that problem without drugs
